You could combine a shallow clone (avoiding fetching the entire history) with spare checkouts.

$ git clone --depth 1 --no-checkout https://github.com/wesnoth/wesnoth-old.git wesnoth
$ cd wesnoth

$ git config core.spareCheckout true
$ echo 'resources/*' >>.git/info/sparse-checkout
$ git checkout master

(only works with git 1.7.*)

But the gain is probably minimal, since git is not designed for cherry-picking lone directories.

How fast would be downloading a git archive? (clicking on 'zip file' on the github page)

trewe

(800GB o0? You mean MB right?)

Yessss...

With this link
https://github.com/wesnoth/wesnoth-old/blob/master/resources/image-localization/maps/Heir_To_The_Throne/localization.xcf

the answer is a page that say "(Sorry about that, but we can't show files that are this big right now)"

and if you try to access the "raw" file, from the following link

https://raw.github.com/wesnoth/wesnoth-old/master/resources/image-localization/maps/Heir_To_The_Throne/localization.xcf

the answer is "Error: blob is too big"

I cloned the whole repository (around 800GB, 2 days of sync with slow DSL...:( ) and the file localization.xcf is 12MB...

        Hi there!

        One question:

        It is 2 days that I'm trying do download a single file
        localization.xcf for the localization of maps, with all the
        tools that I can even imagine (wget, curl, git, firefox,
        explorer, etc. etc... ) but the answer is always the same:
        file too big.

        Does anyone know a way to avoid the clone of the whole
        repository in order to access file bigger than 10k on the new
        github repository?

        Thanks for hints

        Ciao
        A
