Another option for a lightweight webserver is lighttpd. nginx is more 
prevalent, but personally I found lighttpd easier to understand. At first, 
anyway.

In another thread, I just learned about the new MSD boot mode

that Pi3's support. This allows them to run without an SD card and the file 
system(s) solely on a hard drive or other USB device.
