First, let me say this is excellent work and much appreciated. Along with the new scaffolding app, web2py is really looking very polished now. Thanks for your work Bruno, Martin, and Jose (and anyone else involved).
Now for some feedback... Regarding the new logo, although it does indeed look very cool, I'm not sure it quite fits with the web2py "brand identity." To me, the logo looks a bit stark, ominous, almost goth -- sort of saying, "web2py, the bad boy of Python frameworks." But when I think of web2py and its community, I think "professional", "mature", "open", "welcoming", even "friendly". Perhaps the old logo could use some updating, but to me it did a better job of capturing the web2py identity. If we want to stick with the new logo, perhaps it could at least be softened a bit (as is, it reminds me of a bat with its wings spread open). Also, this isn't as big a deal, but the header/footer color is perhaps a bit too desaturated/washed-out (which contributes to the "darkness" evoked by the logo). Here are some other observations (note, I'm viewing via IE8 on Windows 7): * Fixed header: I'm on the fence about this -- on some pages, it's nice, but especially when viewing the code on the examples page, you start wishing you had that extra vertical space to see more of the code without scrolling. If I had to choose, I think I'd say let the header scroll instead of keeping it fixed. * In the top nav, maybe move Documentation immediately to the right (or even left) of Download, instead of at the end. Also, maybe change "Staff" to "Contributors" (seems more descriptive of what's on that page). * The list of items down the right side (starting with User Groups) seems to be in a somewhat random order. Maybe they could be at least roughly grouped -- something like user community (User Groups, Live Chat, User Voice, Twitter), learning/documentation (Interactive Demo, FAQ, Videos, Quick Examples, web2py Slices), and applications/plugins. * At least in my browser, the fonts used in the boxinfo class appear a bit unclear (i.e., jagged/blocky rather than smooth). * On the home page, the Visitor locations map is showing visitors to mdp.cti.depaul.edu, not web2py.com (and the graphic isn't too attractive). Also, the Support web2py widget is cut off at the bottom, so I don't see any button to click to donate. Also, I'm not sure we want to show the amount raised so far. * On the home page, it would be nice if the "Recent development" and "Latest posts" boxes showed the dates (and maybe times) -- this would show the high activity of development and of the user community (e.g., 3 commits in the last 2 days; 5 posts in the last hour). * On the examples page, the row of links at the top (i.e., simple | session |...| auth) now wraps to a second line, which doesn't look so good. * In the affiliated companies list, www.brainyone.com, www.star-nix.com, and www.easytouch-edv.com appear to be dead links. Also, the Hipercenter link has "</la>" instead of "</a>" -- at least in IE, this causes the following item (Brainyone) to be rendered improperly. * The documentation page should probably also include links to the examples, videos, and FAQ -- so we'll have one page with links to ALL relevant learning/documentation resources. Finally, this probably isn't the time, but for the next revision, we might think about re-organizing things a bit. For example, maybe the top nav should include a Community link, an Applications/Plugins link, etc. Also, as previously discussed, ultimately we could use an improved "powered by web2py" list, linking the handful of _best_ examples plus maybe project descriptions and/or names of companies using web2py for non-public web apps. It would also be great to integrate and standardize the look and feel of currently disparate resources (e.g., appliances, plugins, slices, FAQ, etc.). Anyway, I hope I don't sound too critical. I really think the new site is fantastic and a much needed improvement. Great work everyone!
