If you want to use a specific version of python, I suggest you go with the source version of web2py.
What do you mean by "see actual error happening"? If you want to debug, and observe operation of web2py, you also will want to use the source version, and a debugger / breakpoint facility for most visibility of what goes on (I use WingIDE; other's user Eclipse, winpdb, etc. - search the forums for threads about debugging tools).
