Indeed it is subtle, perhaps it should make it clearer that it assumes TLS by default whereas previous versions didn't.
As for the debug statements I was just looking for a way to get this from my live app, on occasions when I need to monitor live use. I guess I can always switch off the service and run the live in the way described above for a period of time.
