The problem with non-official repositories is that I cannot guarantee to be in-sync with the official ones and also am not sure about all the 'regulations' that might be in effect for a particular distribution. I can make a package that works (in my own repo) but it might break something for someone who has a significantly different setup than mine (especially as web2py can be set up in so many ways). That's why on the long run it's necessary to get in the official repositories (to be in the autobuild process, official testing, etc etc) and for that I need an official developer's support - I don't think I know Ubuntu or Debian so intimately as to become a maintainer myself, but I can make a package which can easily be adopted/reviewed/ corrected by someone who is.
