Thanks Ondrej,

I do have unixodbc loaded - the MacPorts program (port at a shell) is
a installer, like apt-get in Linux.
I also seem to have (pre-installed?) iODBC and I don't know, but I
think it may be getting in the way
or at least confusing the issue.  I have no experience at all with
ODBC on the Mac (until a week ago
anyway  ;v) but it is the platform I want to develop on.
