I came across some movie from the 50s I believe it was in which our Ernest T was a normal guy married to Patti Page! He spoke normally and looked normal too. Of course I recognized him right away but he was so different, aka? "normal" that it was eerie! Just shows the talent of the man! Mayberry, it's everywhere!!!
I think the movie you were referring to was Boy's Night Out from 1963. It starred Kim Novak, James Garner , Tony Randall and, like you said, a very "normal" Howard Morris (aka Ernest T Bass). I had to look twice to realize it was actually him.
