Hey, Mayberry friends. We got our first telephone sometime around 1960 and it was a four party line. You had a certain ring to answer (I think ours was two short rings), anyway if you picked up the phone at any time you may hear how someone's feet hurt. An audible click would alert the talker that someone was listening and you could get blessed out for eavesdropping. My how times have changed. Ain't technology wonderful.
