I think I finally solved the Mystery of Mr. Schwump. I am reading the World War II spy mystery Double Cross Blind by Joel N. Ross. The Germans have a double agent and they are setting up a meeting. They are to meet - now are you ready for this ? - at the All Souls Church. Now that explains why Mr. Schwump never speaks in Mayberry. And I am sure I have seen him at the All Souls Church. In fact I believe he was at Andy and Helen's wedding. So Barney wasn't far off when he suspected Ed Sawyer of being a spy. He had the right idea, but he just had the wrong person at the wrong time. Maybe this will put to rest the fascinating Mystery of Mr. Schwump. And I would not be a bit surprised if he answered to Herr Schwump.
