The "Send Sample Now" feature has persuaded me not to buy several books; 10
or 20 I guess. It lets you see many pages of some books. I think the author
or publisher decides how big the extract should be. This one goes up to p.
39 of the print edition.

The Kindle reminds me of Japanese bookstores back in 1972. High school and
college kids would stand around reading books and magazines, and then put
them back without paying. The owners complained! Somerset Maugham described
doing the same thing in France when he was a student. As long as you don't
sit down or put the book down you can read the whole thing.

Nowadays Japanese bookstore owners have wised up, and they put most books in
plastic bags. Also, Japanese students no longer read books -- only comic
books.
