Some pages were missing or truncated, so I scanned them again with my HP scanner, in 300 dpi grayscale. That's better, but it would take me the better part of forever to do the whole book with this method.

For example, I rescanned PDF page 36 (which is numbered page 26 in the book). You can see that Figure 3 is more square with better resolution than most other figures. Depending on your version of Acrobat and your computer, you might also see that p. 36 redisplays in an annoying fashion.

Unfortunately some of the small grayscale text came out a little worse than the CCITT4 version. The page number "26" in the top left of the page is missing some segments. In a higher resolution Acrobat file it is perfectly formed. Unfortunately, even a small increase in resolution increases the file size significantly. At the best resolution, the first 70 pages come out at 63 MB. That's one-tenth of the book, so the whole thing would be ~630 MB compared to 27 MB (measured on disk).

To make a long story short, Acrobat is a damn nuisance.
