Oracle Reports (Motif) on Unix requires a connection to an active X server. Since the only available X server was via a network connection and I was getting connection timeouts, we installed vncserver ( recommended by Oracle) from the Red Hat distribution. The vncserver was invoked from another userid and when I would start the reports60_server process and attempt to run a report via my browser I kept getting error indicating connection refused by server. At one point after trying different display ports and following intructions from Oracle Release Guide, I got message stating invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE... Note on Oracle Metalink said to remove .Xauthority as it had become corrupt. I then starting getting "refused by server..." errors again. Only until I started vncserver from the "oracle" id did it begin to work. I also get message that a .Xauthority file was created in my home directory.
My question is, nowhere have I found either in Oracle doc or VNC doc an explanation of the need to do this or why. Not being an experienced Unix admin or having one available that knows about X, we are unaware of the ramifications of "xauth" and the .Xauthority file. Have others experienced this situation or if any vnc developers read this email, is it possible to explain the association of the .Xauthority file and vnc??? ______________________________________________________________________ This email transmission and any documents, files or previous email messages attached to it may contain information that is confidential or legally privileged.
