A major figure in our Medical School (Sr. Vice President for Health Sciences) sent the memo below to all of our faculty this morning. The gist of the memo is that Citrix was considered for use by physicians in the Med School but it was found to be too expensive. I'm wondering if VNC could do the job. Does Citrix do the same thing as VNC or is it entirely different?

I asked the AHC Administrative Information Services Office to analyze technical, functional, and financial aspects of a Citrix option. We also asked Allscripts for a review of their experience with Citrix and how such an option would work with Macintosh desktops and the IPAC handheld device. We have learned that implementing a Citrix option would present significant technical and financial challenges to the AHC. There would be major start-up costs and a significant delay to the UMP EMR rollout schedule. In addition, pursuing a Citrix option for EMR would still not solve the Fairview Clinical Information Systems or FCIS hardware requirements regarding Macintosh desktops. Therefore, at this time, the AHC will not be implementing the Citrix server option. If the opportunities improve in the future, we are willing to revisit this or other ideas.
