This is anyone's guess.  AT&T certainly hasn't made any noise about
coming out with a new release.  At this point it appears that they have
mostly abandonded the project as far as public releases go, but there
have been rumors that one of their developers will take up the project
again someday.

I completely agree.  This is one of the reasons some of us have been
talking about starting a new project to pick up the slack and try to
integrate many of the disparate improvements that various people have
come up with over the years.  If and when this project comes to fruition
it will hopefully meet your needs.  In the meantime, I recommend
TightVNC as a project which is in active development and is probably the
best general purpose VNC distribution:
