I would like to announce the public availability of vncsnapshot. This is a
command line utility which will fetch a single image of a VNC server's screen
and save it as a JPEG file. It runs under Windows, Unix and Linux systems
(binaries are available for Windows, Linux, and Solaris).

It is based on TightVNC (www.tightvnc.com - thanks Constantin!), so it
shares that version's encodings and other features.

There is a rather simple SourceForge web page,
<http://vncsnapshot.sourceforge.net>, which includes documentation.

The sources and binaries can be downloaded from the SourceForge project
site, <http://sourceforge.net/projects/vncsnapshot/>.

Binaries include only the executable.

There is one known problem with it: the server's cursor may or may not be
included in the snapshot. For Windows servers, it usually is not included -
unless the cursor happens to be moving while vncsnapshot is connecting to
the server. This appears to be a peculiarity of the server.

It is unlikely this problem can be fixed, as the VNC protocol (RFB) does not
include any way of ensuring the cursor can be included. Constantin's
enhancements include a way of sending the cursor image; however, this
message does not include the cursor location.

You are welcome to direct comments & questions directly to me or to the
list. Currently, the vncsnapshot web page doesn't have an e-mail contact; I
will rectify this shortly.
