Thanks for your help: at least you've set me straight as to what counts as the server in a vnc context. I think some of the xauth issues are related to what my notebook thinks it's called when it on dialup as compared with when it's on the office LAN, and what the dialup service thinks it's called - in other words, there's a DNS issue lurking in the background.
