Hello,

I did a mailing list search of the postings related to providing
the path to the rgb database to Xvnc, so I think I've covered
the bases for the following problem so far. First, the symptom
is that all the colors gray80 down to gray76 are the same, but
then gray75 takes a big step down in brightness. I don't use
the -cc option when starting the server, and the viewer does
not have 8-bit pixels activated, so I'm not sure what is
causing this apparently coarse quantization in brightness. I
know it is not a problem with the laptop as Exceed seems to
work alright on it (though I prefer not to use Exceed) i.e. it does
not exhibit the coarse gray level quantization, behaving more
like an actual sun box.

I first suspected erroneous specification of the RGB database
path in the vncserver script, but there are no log error
messages that resemble what I've seen before when I *really*
mis-specified the rgb database. Also, from the maling list, it
seems that the Xvnc command switch in vncserver

     -co /usr/lib/X11/X11/rgb

is right so long as rgb.dir, rgb.pag, and rgb.txt exist in
/usr/lib/X11/X11, which is the case (the rgb command
creates the 1st two database files from the 3rd text file).

However, I see suspicious connection details in the log file:

     Got connection from client XXX.YYY.Z.W
     Protocol version 3.5
     Ignoring minor version mismatch
     Pixel format for client XXX.YYY.Z.W:
       8 bpp, depth 8
       true colour: max r 7 g 7 b 3, shift r 0 g 3 b 6
       no translation needed
Using hextile encoding for client XXX.YYY.Z.W
     rfbProcessClientNormalMessage: ignoring unknown encoding 8
Using compression level 9 for client XXX.YYY.Z.W
Enabling X-style cursor updates for client XXX.YYY.Z.W
Enabling LastRect protocol extension for client XXX.YYY.Z.W

I'm running tightVNC server "version 3.3.3r2+tight1.2.2" on
solaris 8, and TightVNC viewer version 1.2.1 on WinME,
Dell Inspiron8000 (latptop with TFT screen). I am invoking the
viewer using the listener daemon icon, and setting the options
from there as well. In addition, I ensured that JPEG compression
was off.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Fred
