I didn't manage to get authhosts to work either, but with ZoneAlarm it 
became a non-issue.

I get quite good results with tight vnc over an ADSL line. You may also 
want to consider some of the recommendations on this list and in the FAQ's 
about 8-bit, limited colors, etc. All of them can make performance 
improvements.

I very much prefer to leave the icon alone, as I consider it an important 
safeguard for _my_ protection in case a privacy concern comes up. I make it 
very clear to my users that I absolutely won't connect unless invited _or_ 
to do after hours maintenance, and remind them that they can always look at 
the icon to see if I'm there.
