Objet : Re: kdm in -inetd mode
I think there is some confusion here regarding terminology. In addition
to 'xdm' being a specific display manager implementation or package, it
also tends to be a generic way to reference whatever display manager is
running, which can be confusing. Probably because xdm is the legacy
display manager and many of the others now used to be based off of it,
including sharing the configuration files.

VNC uses *whatever* display manager is running. However that display
manager must have XDMCP enabled (most don't do it by default) or you
will get the blank grey screen. So to solve your problem, you must
figure out how to enable XDMCP for kdm. Older versions of kdm used the
'xdm' configuration files. BUT, newer versions of kdm are moving to
their own configuration files like '/etc/kde2/kdm/kdmrc' or equivalent
and NOT the xdm specific files. 'gdm' uses gdm.conf
(/etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf on my Debian system).

Just find where your versions of the kdm configuration files (kdmrc,
Xaccess,. . .) are and edit them. In the kdm file, look for the XDMCP
section and enable xdmcp and make sure it is on port 177. This should
work unless you have a busted version of kdm. Don't forget to edit the
other relevant files like Xaccess.

---------------
I use xdm, are you talking about DisplayManager.requestPort: 177 ?
Initially it was set to 0, I changed it to 177 but same problem.

Not sure that there is some relationship with my problem. My original problem
concern but when I try to start X locally, I get:

_XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running

Fatal server error:
Cannot establish any listening socket - Make sure an X server isn't already
running.

But I have no X server already running!

Any idea?
Thanks,
Alain.
