I have a Mandrake 8.1 box with vncserver running as an automatic service. It
is possible to telnet from Win98 on the same TCP/IP LAN to the Linux without
any problem.

However, connecting using VNC client (for Windows) is another story. It
normally refuses connection, but sometimes with many running vncservers on
the linux side and trials on the windows, it may connect.

Please help me understand the system by answering the following questions:

1. Do I have to run X on the server side? Or is it possible to view just the
console on the linux without X using VNC client on windows side?

2. vncserver automatically starts as a service at the boot on linux. However
it seems that I have to run many more vncservers with different display
numbers to connect. Isn't one instance of vncserver service which normally
starts at the boot sufficient for the purpose?

3. What is the display number of the vncserver which automatically starts on
linux?

Thank you for your kind help and hints.
