it's the same as on normal VNC - minimal.  However, VNC is easily tunelled
through such (free) secure products as SSH (http://www.openssh.org) and my
personal favourite for it's ease of use (on Windows), Zebedee
(http://www.winton.org.uk/zebedee).

Depends on what you're trying to do - graphically intensive remote desktops
and slower computers make it seem slower.  Check out the TightVNC
distribution at http://www.tightvnc.com - it has some features built in that
make VNC more effecient over slower connections.
