The tar-ball actually contains source files in vnc_unixsrc/Xvnc/lib/zlib .
>From your reply, it seems that there are other zlib files I have to install
separately, as well as JPEG files.  I'll follow the intructions in the
documentation page, which I should have checked first (I only checked
the mailing list).  Thanks for pointing that out.

It seems like the compiler fails to find include files for zlib and
jpeg libraries. I think the documentation at

  http://www.tightvnc.com/docs.html#uinst

would help you to eliminate the problem. Also, I think I'll prepare
one more TightVNC packaging option: full source + zlib and jpeg
libraries. It would compile out of the box without need to edit any
makefiles. That could be helpful for non-Linux users.
