I have a G3 Mac that has a failed 17" monitor and I can use VNC from my IBM thunderbird to access and control the G3 with no problem. Of course the monitor is still connected to the Mac, but I don't think that would make a difference. The only thing you need is for the monitorless computer to fully and completely boot so as to load the VNC program before you accessed that computer from another.
