I solved my own problem and those of you out there that are having similar problems on systems after updating service packs or getting the immediate disconnect should also try this. I completely removed the video drivers on the server I wish to control, rebooted, and reinstalled the video drivers, then rebooted again. I set the default video display color depth to be the same as my client (High Color 16bit for both). Magically I was able to connect to the system through the service. I hacked the registry to set the default color depth but most of you shouldn't need to do that. I have replaced network cards (I used to use 3com exclusively but have had LOTS of problems with them in the last 18 months or so, you CANNOT use multiple 3COM PCI adapters in the same system because of HW identification problems, geez.) I have replaced video cards, changed brands to standardize servers bought during different times. Thought someone might be interested. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I have searched the archives and found several similar problems, but no resolutions to my problem. I have 2 servers running Win2k sp2 and WinVNC 3.3.3r9. On one of the boxes everything runs fine. I have VNC installed as a service and can connect to and operate efficiently. On the other hand, the other server is unable to be connected to when run as a service. I have successfully connected to the server when running in APP mode but not when running as a service. I have verified the screen resolution the server is running at 800x600 and 256 colors (both servers) and both servers have identical video HW and drivers. I have attempted to connect with various clients (linux, win98, win2k, java) and have had the same results. below is the log from startup through close of a single session connection attempt.
