What operating system are you using?  The default configuration works fine
for me under Windows NT 4.0, but a friend of mine who runs Windows 98 had to
use the full-screen polling mode to get some programs to update properly.

The curious thing is that even when the screen is not updating, the
computer is still running very slowly as if WinVNC is doing some work. But
with no visible result.
