For NT boxes, I have always had to gain remote access via dialup or "VPN"
(PPP or PPTP). Even if the PC had a public IP and was live, I have setup
PPTP connection to be safe. If you have a NT 4.0 or 2000 server it would be
best to setup a "VPN" connection to gain access to a remote network. Almost
all of your routing issues would be taken care of by the remote access
server. RRAS Doesn't take up much resources for NT if your the only one
connecting. This has worked for me with and I do not have to worry much
about security as long as the username/password policies are strict. my .02

This doesn't cover servers in the DMZ. Linux, Win2k boxes in the DMZ are all
managed the same way by having one nic on the internal network and the other
nics connected to the DMZ. I haven't used VNC for *nix. as of yet though.

I have seen "appliance" pc's running linux that advertise RRAS services but
have not looked into what they actually are.

Since we get an IP from the RRAS, any pc - mac *nix windows - can be
accessed. That's pretty close to cross platform coverage. Jason

MindTerm is a Java-based client which I've run successfully on Mac and
Windows. It does, or claims to do, ssh tunneling, although I've only used
it as an ssh terminal and for scp file transfers. It's worth looking into,
however...

Check out <http://www.mindbright.se/mindterm> for details.

Hope this helps,
