Actually, VNC does not send clear-text passwords, but uses a
challenge/response authentication scheme using a random challenge and a
3DES cipher. I've just released a Mac server which uses an RC5 cipher, a
longer challenge, and allows longer passwords to be used. Details of the
new authentication scheme are being documented and will be made available
when ready.
