Probably you've got your XDM configured to not accept incoming connections
from the network. Try changing the line specifying the server to be
"localhost" in case you've got local network access enabled.
I've noticed that some distributions, out of the box, disable xdm network
logins inside xdm instead of in the firewalling rules. As I remember,
you need to look through the config files in /etc/X11/xdm for something.
I don't remember the details, because it was so obvious when I saw it.
