Thanks for your reply, Ewan. From what I can tell, the "VNC Server" service
is started when Win2K boots up. As is indicated under the registry key
HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Services\winvnc, the following command is used to
start the service:
        "C:\Program Files\ORL\VNC\WinVNC.exe" -service

When a user logs in, the command:
        "C:\Program Files\ORL\VNC\WinVNC.exe" -servicehelper
is executed. This is listed under the registry key
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, and is more or less
equivalent to having a shortcut in the Startup folder. (My Startup folder is
empty.)

It may be that both of these processes have to be running in order for the
vncviewer to be able to connect. Or perhaps there is a registry setting or
other parameter that can be changed to make this work. Thanks. Jeff.

Subject: Re: Win32 "VNC Authentication Failed" after server reboot

Is it not the case that, prior to logging in, only the service is running,
not the actual server?

In my setup, the server is started by my Startup folder, i.e., once I've
logged in.

Maybe there's a way of starting the server prior to a user being present.
