Speaking from the perspective of a somewhat casual VNC user...

I think you are absolutely right -- this (ab)use of VNC has a HUGE potential
to impact VNC's reputation (negatively). I think the VNC development group
should act aggressively to prevent it being used in this manner.

Imagine this: network administrator installs VNC on the CEO's desktop.
Admin then uses VNC to monitor CEO's internet use, capture personal
information, and capture 'secret' company information. Admin uses the
personal information to impress his friends, embarrass the CEO, and/or
commit blackmail. Or he uses the trade secrets to make money trading
company stock.

This story then appears in ComputerWorld (widely read by IT administrators).

In very short order, VNC would appear on the Banned list of software for
many companies. You propose using VNC, and people would react as if you
wanted to plant hidden cameras in the bathroom stalls and listening devices
in the cafeteria.

Yes, there may be legitimate uses for this feature. But they don't merit
the risk to the reputation (and hence the availability) of this wonderful
product.
