It seems that I am not alone in my plight from a couple of months ago, as I
have received a few more messages from various people asking if this got
resolved.

So here goes.

VNC has two password types.

1. The Default Password which is controlled from: (Global)
 "Start Menu -> VNC -> Administrative Tools -> Show Default Settings"

2. The Current User Password which is controlled from: (Per User)
 "Start Menu -> VNC -> Show User Settings"

When the Windows 2000 "Login Screen" is up it uses the "Default Password".
When a User is logged into the machine, it uses the Current User Password.

I have not done any large scale testing on this, as we only have 1 machine
running Windows 2000 with VNC.  What I can tell you is, it "caches" the
password for the duration of the session, so for instance.

Here is how I got myself into trouble. I logged on as "Administrator".  I
installed VNC, I installed the Service, I started the Service manually.  It
asked me for a password (I did not pay attention at this point) I typed in a
password... Then from a remote workstation I did a VNC connect with that
same password and it worked fine... I then remotely logged out, and then
logged in as a normal user account, and that worked fine... when I was done
I logged out back to the login screen, and closed my VNC connection...
OPPSS!!

I can not reconnect... why?  Because when I set the password for
"Administrator" I set a "Current User" password... I never ran the "Show
Default Settings" icon, and therefore never set the default password.  At
this point there was no way for me to reconnect via VNC... I had to go back
to the machine, login as "Administrator", and set the default password, by
using the "Show Default Settings" icon.

Now I have not done any more troubleshooting than this, but I would surmise,
that if new accounts are created on the Windows 2000 machine, that they
would "inherit" the password that is set for the Default User, and therefore
any new accounts on the machine would have the same default password.

Additionally, I'm not sure what the point of this is, unless it is a start
at trying to create a password system per user... but as I said before the
VNC connection is cached until it drops... Meaning, if I VNC connect with
the "Default Password" I can logon as any Windows 2000 account that I know
the password for... Even if the account that I log-onto has a different VNC
connection password...

OK... enough verbosity... I hope this helps others that are just starting
out with Windows 2000 machines.

Hello James,

I have been reading over the long discussion that went on a few months ago
about how Win 2000 Advanced Server seems to behave differently than the
version of Win2000 that you had tested with.

We are using the WIN-VNC 3.3.3r7 on a variety of NT4 boxes without any
problems (running as a service), however... Our one lonely Windows 2000
Server (not Advanced), the service refuses to work at the logon screen...
the service answers... but...

When I try to connect I get a password failed message.

However, if I physically log the machine in past the logon screen, the
password suddendly works, and everything works.  Now if I during my VNC
session, log-out and then log-in as a different user, still everything works
fine.

But if I log-out and am therefore sitting at the "Press CRTL-ALT-DEL" to
logon screen... And kill the VNC connection... well... then I need to walk
back to the server and physically log it in again, before VNC will
authenticate my password...

It seems to me that something is preventing the password from being properly
authenticated. As I mentioned I do get a request for entering the VNC
password...

Any ideas? Work arounds, etc?

Relevant information:  Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Serivce Pack 1, all
current Critical Updates via windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
