TridiaVNC version 1.2.2 and later fixed the 0 bpp problem.  See the
URLs in my signature for more info.

Once the Unix VNC server gets in this state, you have to shoot
the horse (kill the process).  No further clients will be able
to connect.  The problem occurs on older VNC servers with 16 or
24/32 bit viewer sessions.

I'm fairly sure the pixel format structure on the server side was
being corrupted.  The unix viewer prints out the server's native
pixel format when starting up.
