Tom,

Have you checked out the UltraVNC single click server yet? You, the
admin, create an exe with their tool that connects back to your computer
when they double-click on it.

It's really a no brainer for the end users because all that they have to
do is double-click on an icon on their computers and the single-click
client that you created connects back to your admin computer.

Subject: RE: VNC for Customer Help-desk application

You guys are right... I misunderstood what s-code's activex was. Yury at
s-code told me yesterday that what I saw on their site is an activex
**Viewer**. He said they are working on an ActiveX version of the
server.
I dunno, guys, from the initial reading I've done (and the responses
I've seen) the impression like getting VNC to run on a remote computer
in some cases will require more configuration than we're willing (or
able) to have our customers do.
We just can't have our users having to type in IP addresses or go to
sysadmins asking for admin rights to do an install or for ports to be
opened... (even though WebEx occasionally requires that too!) It sounds
like we might be able to figure out a fairly reliable way to do a
hands-off install on a customers' machine, launch the server and even
get it to punch out a connection to our helpdesk. But, we're nervous
about idiosyncratic local configuration hurdles that would prevent
installation or the connection.
The group on this list is a great reservoir of experience. If I may
ask, what is *your* experience getting VNC servers installed and
connecting on computers outside your organization's network? How often
do you have to handhold a user, having them do manual configurations? I
can see that VNC is an enormously popular tool... but is it more for
digit-heads (a term which I user respectfully!) than for turn-key,
hands-off installation and connection?
If I'm abusing this list by trying to initiate a discussion like this...
or if it's a dead horse that doesn't deserve any more abuse, my
apologies. In that case, I'll refrain...

You're right, I think that it is just a viewer but they do distribute a
recompiled "SmartCode VNC Server" inside their vnc manager application
with no source code available. Is that what he's talking about?

BTW, it's still being sold by them and integrated into their commercial
applications. A link to it is on their front page. The last time that
this discussion came up, it got pretty heated so I think that I'll duck
out, now. :)
