If the item that i want to take a picture of is large i hold the iPhone 1 arms.length away from the item with the camera pointed as close to the center of the item.
If the item is small or if i'm just wanting to know the color of the item, i hold the camera 6-12 inches away from the item. Having some lights helps. The flash from the camera if there isn't enough light can cause the picture to be blurry or a Null result to be returned.
