Twitter's actually replaced my Facebook consumption outside of Friend
updates since it's more realtime, but something like reader can't really be
substituted. Between feeds to shopping and deal sites, obscure political
technology or economic blogs, foreign language stuff and so on it would be
too tedious to try to keep up with everything just on Twitter or the other
social media sites. Not to mention, that Reader worked across all platforms
with good synchronization. Portable devices and the regular computer. With
the last few updates, jaws finally ironed out the bugs that made Reader a
challenge to use in some areas.

Since the drop dead date is still a few months away, I'll keep using it.
Grabbing the opml file is easy enough. Hopefully things may be sorted out by
then and a decent cross platform substitute will emerge.

Oh well...

To some extent, you can use Twitter lists to do what RSS feeds do. For
example I have a general news list, and a tech news list. Most major news
publications publish their RSS feed to Twitter. However, I prefer using an
RSS reader for anything but breaking news where I want real time updates,
where of course Twitter can't be surpassed, because of the ability to
preview the news story in any good feed reader. With Twitter, you get the
headline and the URL. With Feeddler, I can read enough of the story right
there in the article list to know if I want to open the full article.
Twitter just can't be as efficient in this respect.

Maybe there's a Twitter client and service out there I'm not aware of, but I
haven't found anything that's as easy to setup and use to get updates on the
pages I want to follow as RSS and Google Reader in particular. If I have to
rely on Twitter, I'll be spending a lot more time to get at much less
relevant information.
