If you hold the phone horrizontally with the screen flat in front of you, the switch you are talking about is the mute switch. Push it down to mute the phone, that is to say toward the underside of the phone. To unmute the phone push the switch up, toward the screen of the phone. I had the same issue at first with my first iphone.
