So I have listened you primarily selected, but I selected other things, and my
groups own messages are all over those categories. And I believe my Google
messages are the same way. Which is kind of crazy. And I am running 18.2.

My conclusion is that even with List biew selected in the native Mail app,
users of different devices are getting different results with the categories
being assigned. I'm using an iPhone 13 Mini running iOS 18.3 and even with List
view selected, all of my Groups.io<http://groups.io/> email list messages have
assigned categories. However, none of the messages in this viphone Google
groups thread have a category. I was unable to change any Mail settings with
the help of someone knowledgeable from Apple Accessibility to prevent the
category assignment on my device and she concluded that it was expected
behaviour. I've gotten used to the categories but I don't like that on my
device, when I execute the More button to access either Category or List to
make my choice, VoiceOver no longer indicates which one is selected. Will
others reading this please respond whether your device announces which is
selected and what device and iOS you're running and what VoiceOver announces
when the choices in the More context menu have focus?

Anna, I am curious about what you said about "your messages will still have
category labels". I don't experience this and I wonder why.

Hi,

Open a mailbox and choose the More button near the top of the screen. Choose
List view. Then your messages will still have category labels, but they'll be
listed in the usual order.

Best,
Anna

Sorry, as I’m sure this has been covered before, but last night my iphone
updated to the latest software and I really don’t like the way my e-mails are
now displayed. Could you tell me please how to return them to their previous
display settings?
