Alan, the only thing that I can recommend they would achieve what you want.
Would be turning off Wi-Fi and cellular data. That way it doesn't refresh. I'm
surprised the-apple did not suggest that.

Hello List,

I will start by saying I’ve talked with Apple Accessibility, Apple Care, and
Apple Support on this issue without success in achieving my goal. I use the
native Mail app to read and delete between 100 to 300 emails a day. When I’m
using the native Mail app, I want it to refresh and provide me with my current
Inbox messages when I first open it but I don’t want it to refresh again while
I’m using the app. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been deleting an email
that a refresh occurs causing the message with focus to change and my deleting
the wrong message as a result. I’ve been into the Mail app settings for my
Gmail account and have been unable to figure out what combination of settings
achieves what I want. Turning off Push doesn’t do it and setting fetch to
manual doesn’t do it. I’m using an iPhone 13 Mini running iOS 18.1.1 and would
welcome any suggestions.

I would encourage you before making a setting suggestion to make sure yours is
set the same and go into the native Mail app for a bit to ensure new messages
aren’t arriving with the setting.

Thanks in advance for any help.
