There is usually a new version every 3 years so if you were to buy the latest version each time and assuming the price is $250 then you would buy 3 versions for a total of $750. I also thought the US price for an individual Microsoft 365 subscription is $59.99 a year. Furthermore if you do have a few people who need to have Office then for $100 or so a year you can get the subscription which allows up to 5 people to download a full version of Office and use it, that is only $20/year/person.
As for updates, Office via a Microsoft 365 subscription gets much more frequent updates and these include feature updates and not just security update. Lastly, the Microsoft 365 subscription also includes 1 Tb of OneDrive storage, that alone is a huge bonus unless you really have no use for online storage.
