That’s somewhat unlucky when the message comes up on the screen of the phone
I open my pros about 4 inchs away form the screen probably near the base and it works fine, You need to make sure the case is fully open and both pods in for it to work best. With the airpods in the case, hold the case near the back of your phone, in the region of the camera and open it. A dialogue should appear, telling you the charge of the airpods and the case. Sometimes, it takes a couple seconds for this dialogue to appear, sometimes you have to try it a couple times, but it should work. It probably will work better with the expensive ones. As for charging pads, any Qi wireless charging pad will do although I would look for one which specifically states it supports the iPhone 12 at least or the iPhone 13 which is better in which case you are sure to get one which supports the latest Apple fast charging standards. Of course if you have a MagSafe case you relaly probably want to get a MagSafe compatible charging pad either from Apple or from a third party like Belkin which makes MagSafe chargers which allow you to charge an iPhone, Apple Watch and Airpods all at the same time. But for one of them be prepared to spend a bit of money, they don't come cheap.
