It is a good idea to set up Face Id in good light, but direct sunlight is not required. Once it is set up it works in complete darkness. You may also find that turning off the attention feature will greatly improve your success rate, it does make it a little less secure, but only if you are worried about somebody would get a hold of your phone and secretly try to unlock it by holding it up to your face without you noticing it. Otherwise Face Id works extremely well and is very fast, maybe a phone with both Face Id and Touch Id would give you the the ultimate flexi flexibility, but if I had to choose one over the other I'd pick Face Id every time because first of all I live in northern British Columbia and you usually wear gloves here for at least 5 month out of the year and secondly I do woodworking and after a few hours in the shop especially when I get a bit of wood glue on to my fingers I can usually kiss Touch I dgood bye for a couple of days.
