Brad's suggestion should work but personally I don't ever use iTunes. I only back up data to iCloud and when I install WhatsApp on a new device I configure WhatsApp to restore from that backup and all works fine. I have only done this during installation of whatsapp on new device, so I don't know if it's possible after whatsapp is set up. If you are sure that data on old device is backed up to iCloud (whatsapp's own backup in whatsapp settings) I would try setting up whatsapp from scratch on new device and when prompted by whatsapp to restore from that backup. As I said this process always works for me. That said I'm not even close to 1 GB of data though but I don't think that makes any difference. My whatsapp backup is about 50 MB and only includes text messages. I never backup audio/video/pics.
