Besides locked phones, Apple produced different phones for different network technologies in North America until 2018. Then, all the iPhones introduced in that year were compatible with all North American carriers. The iPhone 7 was introduced in 2016. I have an iPhone 7 and specifically bought it at an Apple store because those phones would work with all carriers. Those bought directly from a carrier might only work with GSM or CDMA providers. Now that everyone is on 4G LTE networks, the carrier phones might only work well on the frequencies for that carrier. Before 2018, phones sold by American carriers often did not have all the frequencies used by other carriers.
