As long as you don't have any outstanding obligations to At&t and your
phone meets their unlock requirements, getting it unlocked is simple and
quick. Most of the unlock policies are pretty straight forward. For
example: T-mobile requires that a phone be active on their network for
at least 60 days with no outstanding obligations to them on your bill
and the phone must be paid off if you purchased it from them under a
payment plan. At&t is probably very similar to this.

You probably need to give the IMEI number to Verizon to make sure it
can work on their platform.
You find that under Settings, General, About.
It is quite a ways down that screen.
After the network information, Carrier, then IMEI.
If it is locked to AT&T you will have to get AT&T to unlock it.
