The phone is set to never lock. Passcode is set to use after 4 hours. So, if the phone is locked manually, and it stays locked more than four hours, the passcode is needed. If you have a phone with a home button, setup touch ID, and it will primarily ask for the passcode after you reboot it, but if you just lock it and come back later, the finger print will unlock it. If you have a phone with no home button, setup Face ID. Same thing, if you don't reboot the phone, you should be able to unlock it with the face ID.
