Just to add to what Wayne says, If you hear the VoiceOver clicks, remove your finger from the screen and start over. You want the finger tip on the edge of the phone, not really on the screen, and as you slide onto the screen you will hear a different sort of sound, keep going until the first sound and maybe vibration occurs and lift your finger for home. If you have VoiceOver hints on, if you hesitate a little, VoiceOver will say "lift for home button or something like that. The second blip and vibration is the app switcher.

If you then slide up, you will encounter 2 beeps and vibrations. The first is the Home screen vibration, and the second is for the App Switcher. Simply lift your finger when you find the one you want. It is a little hard to describe, but once you get it down, you will have it. If I want to go to the App Switcher on my iPhone XR, I put my finger at the bottom of the screen, feel the bottom bump and here the low pitched bonk, and then slide up until I hear and feel the second bonk and vibration, and then I lift my finger.
