Have you restarted your iPhone? I just added one this morning from recents and right away after I saved it Voiceover announced the name and not the number.

Someone told me that you're only supposed to put 100 contacts in your phone, while others have told me that they have a lot more than 100. I always hit the Save or Done button after I add new contacts. My iPhone is a 7+ and I don't know if the model has anything to do with this, or if it is just some kind of fluke in the phone.
