Hello Holly, Yes, it is not cheap and probably not designed for people on a low or fixed income. I have used Be My Eyes from time to time and had some good experiences and one thing that is nice with Be My Eyes is that they have teamed up with Microsoft and you can make a video call to Microsoft Accessibility via the Be My Eyes app. I know they are hoping other companies will come on board with this, but so far Microsoft is the only one. The big difference with Aira is that if you do pay for the service you get a pair of Google Glasses with an embedded camera and in the US I think you get a mobile smart hub so you actually connect to Aira using the data of the smart hub and not you r phone. This is part of the reason why it is more expensive since it essentially includes a bunch of mobile data. Also, as you said, the operators are paid and they are trained specifically to help with many tasks, they even have the ability to take pictures through your iPhone, remotely connect to your computer to help you, for example, navigate an inaccessible website or application or to fill out a form online. I believe they are also bonded which means there is a good amount of security and guaranty of privacy.
Oops, I guess now I have discussed the service again and not the app. Well, I guess if that results in Mark kicking me off the list then so be it since I don't agree with the limitation he imposed in any case. I do, however, fear that the Viphone list may loose a good portion of key contributors if he remains firm on this. I have been following the discussion concerning Aira. I am certain that most of you know about the app 'Be My Eyes', which is free and essentially operates like Aira, although the sighted people answering the phones are volunteers, not paid operators. I have never had a particular reason to use either app, as am living with a sighted partner. Could anyone tell me how they compare? The paid version seems very expensive for low income people.
