I am not sure what problem you are running into. I just sent a message on Messenger with no problem. Just to chime in, the Messenger app is broken for me as well. I am using an iPhone 6S Plus running iOS 10.2.1 along with the latest version of the Facebook Messenger app as of this afternoon. I can read message threads, but can no longer send messages because I just see several unlabelled buttons, none of which appear to send the message. I wonder whether this has to do with changes that are being gradually rolled out on Facebook's end. In any case, it's quite challenging because the mobile Facebook site does not allow you to send messages on an iOS device, instead prompting me to use the Messenger app. I've had to force the desktop site to load in Safari, which is working for the moment.
